System is a Newcastle based artist-run gallery space. It is run by Dan Goodman and Susannah Curran as a platform for emerging contemporary artists. In this vein it doesn’t programme too far ahead and only has short shows in the interest of being able to remain flexible for other artists. It is a space to display, test and develop ideas without too much faff in applying or planning.

Dan Goodman is an artist-curator and is curator of Newcastle-based artist-run gallery, System. He is interested in the overlap between ideas of emotional value, the social, and the spatial within artist communities. In his practice he uses storytelling, creative writing, and curatorial interventions to explore the social world of art and what it means to be part of it.

Usually it just means being open to other peoples’ ideas and saying stuff like “Yeah, alright. Let’s do that”.

I first joined System Gallery in 2018 on an ERDF funded placement after graduating from Newcastle University. As part of the placement I curated two shows in the Gallery; Let Me Down Gently, an exhibition bringing together and showcasing recent art and design graduates from across the North East and Sentiment, an exhibition of work by Meaghan Stewart. I now co-curate the gallery and I am interested in working with early career artists, giving them a platform to experiment with showing new work. Collaboration between curators and artists is also important to me, as it is an exciting way to bring people together to challenge and create different ways of curating and exhibiting. This is an idea I have explored previously as part of Double Yolk, a collective that aimed to connect artists across the UK through exhibiting collaboratively, and ‘Jane Doe presents,’ a week of student-led events at the Ex-Libris Gallery in Newcastle University.

Alongside curating I also have my own art practice, mainly working in print, sculpture and jewellery. In 2019 I was shortlisted for the Gillian Dickinson North East Young Sculptor of the year and I was part of the 2019-20 cohort of the Collective Studio based at The Newbridge Project in Gateshead.
